Hi, I'm Vanessa!

About The Owner: About Me

I am the founder of Canine Cogs.  I was born in Germany, and have relocated between Germany and the United States a number of times before finally ending up here in the Netherlands in 2017.  I live in the southern most part of Den Haag with my boyfriend, 3 rescue dogs (Sonic, Darwin, and Sputnik) and our rescue cat (Caspian).

I've always been geared toward working in the animal world.  I worked for about 10 years in the veterinary industry as a veterinary assistant, where my favorite procedures included dental cleanings under anesthesia and anal gland expressions. With both of these types of procedures, I loved being able to offer both people and their pets relief from pain and stress. During this time of my life, I rescued and trained my first dog - Sonic.  Between him and my patients, I became very interested in companion animal behavior, confidence training in dogs, and dog sports.  I didn't truly start to focus my studies on behavior until I moved to the Netherlands though.  While I had done some courses on behavior, it wasn't until this point and working with my reactive dog, Darwin, that I realized how 'surface level' my prior courses and training had been (even within the Veterinary Technician program).

My full career shift started with an internship at a dog school in Den Haag in 2018.  A few months into the internship, I started the O&O certification program.  I have since started working privately as a dog trainer, private dog walker, and volunteering as a dog trainer at Alphense Hondenclub (AHC) where I give Opvoed 1 and 2 group lessons, prepare students for the FCI recognized SHH exams, and am currently aiding in the revision and restructuring of the Opvoed curriculum.

With my own dogs, I participate in a variety of activities.  My border collie, Sonic, and I used to do sheep herding, frisbee, and agility.  We started Combi-Sport prior to his retirement, and now he is helping me develop my 'Senior Program'.  My black mouth cur, Darwin, is my behavioral project.  His training is focused towards calmness, impulse control, and confidence building.  He will never be a sport dog, but that hasn't stopped us from working on frisbee, trick training, and cani-cross.  My Russian street dog, Sputnik, participates in beginner agility, trick training, and cani-cross with me.
